A group of Innu hunters in Labrador is planning to hunt caribou in an area that government officials say is off limits.

The RCMP recently seized seven caribou carcasses, as well as a snowmobile, from a group of hunters in Sheshatshiu, an Innu community near Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Hunter Tony Penashue said the hunters plan to return to the disputed area on Monday, and insist that hunting there is legal.

"We can still continue doing it, you know," Penashue told CBC News.

"They're going to have to arrest us, … but they can't arrest everybody in the community. It's a community hunt."

Penashue said the seized meat was to have been shared among families in Sheshatshiu.

Provincial wildlife officers are not commenting on the matter.
