An impaired driving charge was formally laid Friday against a senior member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
Insp. Sean Roche did not appear in provincial court in St. John's when the charges — impaired driving and refusing the breathalyzer — were read into the court record.
Sean Roche, seen in this 2001 image, was suspended in January from his Royal Newfoundland Constabulary post.

The case was set over until March 5.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary pulled over a car on Jan. 12 on Pitts Memorial Drive, near the Kilbride area of St. John's.
The RNC had earlier received a complaint about an impaired driver in the Duckworth Street area of St. John's.
The Crown told the court that prosecutors from the Clarenville office will handle the case from now on.
Roche was suspended with pay from his job in January.
