The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has suspended one of its own, after an off-duty officer was charged with impaired driving.

The RNC said Wednesday in a statement that the unidentified officer, who has not yet appeared in court, has also been charged with refusing a breathalyzer.

Patrol officers pulled over a vehicle on Pitts Memorial Drive in St. John's on Saturday night, after receiving a complaint about a suspected drunk driver who had been on Duckworth Street in downtown St. John's.

"The accused has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation," Deputy Chief Robert Johnston said in a statement.

The RNC would only say that the officer will appear in court at a later date.
