A man acquitted in one of British Columbia's most famous unsolved murders has been arrested and charged with drug possession central Newfoundland.

Shannon Murrin and two other men were arrested on Friday. Police said they found just over 18 pounds of marijuana and 26 cartons of contraband cigarettes in the back of a pickup truck that had Ontario licence plates.

Murrin, who is from Newfoundland, was acquitted in 2000 of a murder charge in connection with the 1994 death of eight-year-old Mindy Tran in British Columbia. After that trial, he moved back to Newfoundland from B.C.

Murrin told CBC News outside court Monday that he's innocent of the drug charges.

"Someone threw it in the back of the truck, that's it. Someone threw it there and I don't know who done it," he said.

All three men have been released on bail after being charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

They will be back in Gander for another court appearance in February.
