The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary concluded its investigation into a breach of provincial government security Monday, saying it found no evidence of criminal activity.
In a release issued Monday, the RNC said its involvement is no longer necessary.
On Nov. 20, government officials discovered sensitive patient information may have been accessed through the internet and called police.
The data contained information stored at the Provincial Public Health Laboratory, such as MCP numbers and sensitive test results for infectious diseases including HIV and hepatitis.
The breach was discovered after a computer was unplugged and taken to the home of a consultant who was working for the laboratory.
Someone claiming to be a computer security specialist from outside the province called the consultant and said they could access the data.
The government has hired a computer security firm to lead an investigation and has asked its own chief information officer to determine the scope of the breach and how it could have happened.
