An employee of a St. John's nursing home is being investigated for sexual assault of a resident, police have confirmed.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed it is investigating a complaint that a resident at the Hoyles-Escasoni complex was sexually assaulted.

The police are investigating a female worker at the complex, a 377-bed facility that is operated by the Eastern Health regional authority.

The police are also investigating an allegation that the worker assaulted a nurse at the home.

The resident is a woman who is largely incapacitated and is not able to communicate. Her family brought the complaint to the RNC.

Administrators at Hoyles-Escasoni are not commenting on the investigation, and Eastern Health said it does not discuss personnel issues.
