The Labrador party has decided to not run candidates in two districts where Progressive Conservative incumbents may be defeated, the party's leader said Friday.

The regionally focused party, which polled second in Lake Melville district in the 2003 election, has decided it is not in Labradorians' interests to run in that district and in Labrador West.

Leader Ron Barron said party supporters have decided to back candidates who can provide a strong opposition in Newfoundland and Labrador's legislature.

The governing Progressive Conservatives are seeking a second term in the Oct. 9 election.

Barron, who ran in the Labrador West byelection this winter, said the party will support Liberal Chris Montague in Lake Melville and New Democrat Darrel Brenton in Labrador West.

Barron said the priority is to defeat incumbents John Hickey and Jim Baker, who represent Lake Melville and Labrador West, respectively.

Barron's announcement comes the same day PC Leader Danny Williams took his campaign across Labrador — Williams's second visit to the region this week.

Brenton welcomed the endorsement, saying it will greatly enhance his chances of winning the seat.

The Labrador party will run just one candidate. Jim Tutak will carry the party colours in Torngat Mountains.

When the house of assembly was dissolved on Monday, the Tories held 34 of the legislature's 48 seats. The Liberals held 11, the NDP held one and there were two vacant seats.
