A weak bakeapple season in southern Labrador could put a financial strain on families in the area.

Many households pick and sell the yellow berries, popular for use in tarts and jams, to make a little extra money over the summer.

"Oh, it really hurts, because there are families that make six, seven, eight, 10 thousand dollars just picking bakeapples for two weeks," said picker Reg Hancock. "And that's a crop they won't have this year."

Expectations for a bumper crop of the berries didn't come to fruition this summer due to a heavy July frost.

"I won't say they won't get any, but they're way scarcer than they have been most years. Nothing like a bountiful crop this year," Hancock said.

In Newfoundland, reports said the berries — which are a member of the raspberry family, and are also known as cloudberries — have been plentiful.
