Consumers in the St. John's area have been warned about thousands of powerful pain medications that were stolen from a city pharmacy.

A weekend robbery at a Lawtons Drug Store on Topsail Road involved the theft of more than 10,000 medications.

The stolen drugs included OxyContin, Percocet, Demerol, Dilaudid and a type of morphine, among others.

The robbery occurred at about 6 a.m. on Saturday morning, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said.

"Some of the stolen drugs are very dangerous, highly addictive and can cause death," the RNC said in a statement.

Health complications can include liver damage, severe muscle weakness, extreme fluctuations in heart rate, nausea and severe vomiting.

The RNC's street drug team and its street crimes unit are both investigating the crime.
