People in a Newfoundland outport are scrambling to repair damage to their war memorial in time for Remembrance Day ceremonies this weekend.

Vandals attacked the memorial in Old Perlican, a Trinity Bay community of about 700 residents, last Friday night.

Floodlights that illuminate the memorial were smashed, and flower planters on the site were broken.

"It's senseless," said Mayor Don Burt.

"Somewhere along the line, people are not getting the significance of what we have. Do they know what it all stands for? I'm quite sure if they did, they wouldn't do these things."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the incident.
