A flight engineer from Newfoundland and Labrador who was among three crew members killed during a Canadian Forces search-and-rescue helicopter training exercise last week was laid to rest Thursday.

A full military funeral was held for Sgt. Duane Brazil in St. John's.

Brazil, who was from Gander, was killed on July 13 when a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter crashed off Nova Scotia during a hoist exercise with Canadian coast guard and local fishing vessels.

Master Cpl. Kirk Noel, 33, a search-and-rescue technician from St. Anthony, N.L., and Cpl. Trevor McDavid, 31, a flight engineer from Sudbury, Ont., also died in the crash.

The remaining four crew members — Capt. Gabriel Ringuette, 41, Sgt. Martin Maloney, 49, Capt. Ronald Busch, 40, and Maj. Gordon Ireland, 42 — survived.

Brazil's family has suffered two helicopter tragedies in recent years.

Brazil's brother, Gary, was killed in 2000 when the Canadian coast guard chopper he was travelling in crashed off Newfoundland.

The investigation into the July 13 crash continues.

The helicopter's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were sent to Ottawa for analysis and investigators have interviewed the surviving crew members.

On Wednesday, investigators said the crash cannot be blamed on a faulty tail rotor, a problem detected in other Cormorant helicopters over the years.
