A Welsh adventurer pushed out of St. John's harbour Tuesday morning, in a bid to set a record for rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Rob Munslow waited almost seven weeks for what he described as the best conditions for his transatlantic voyage.

He's hoping to row himself from Newfoundland to the Scilly Isles, off the southwest coast of England, in under 55 days.

Munslow is no stranger to crossing the Atlantic by oar. Last year, he was part of a four-member crew that set a record for their class.

This time, he's alone in a 7.5-metre boat.

"Everything is down to me," Munslow said Tuesday, shortly before his departure.

"The navigation, taking the weather reports, updating the website, running the water maker ... cooking the food and all those things.

"My time is going to be consumed a lot more with smaller jobs, which could be shared in a team of four."

Munslow said he will try to row 40 nautical miles — or almost 75 kilometres — each day.
