Newfoundland songwriting legend Ron Hynes will soon be adding a new award to his mantle, this time from a source close to his heart.
Hynes will receive a lifetime achievement award in August, during the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival.
The award is from the St. John's Folk Arts Council, which organizes the festival.
"I'm really pleased, I really am," said Hynes.
"It's a nice award. I've always thought that the most important event in the city every year is the [festival]. It's just grown so much over the years."
Hynes said only a handful of musicians participated in the folk festival during its earliest years. Now, dozens of performers — including some from other countries — fill the stages at Bannerman Park in St. John's.
Best known for writing the folk standard Sonny's Dream, Hynes has earned numerous awards during a career that began in the early 1970s.
He has won five East Coast Music Awards, a Genie, an honorary doctorate from Memorial University and two awards from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival starts this year on Aug. 4.
