Statistics Canada is contacting people who have yet to complete census forms that were due in May.

While 90 per cent of householders in Newfoundland and Labrador have completed the form, Statistics Canada still wants data from those who missed last month's deadline.

Monica Moriarty, the Atlantic-area manager for the 2006 census, said residents should remember that filling out a census is required by law.

"The majority of the Canadians are pretty good at understanding the importance of the census and the reasons to comply," said Moriarty.

"Some people need a gentle reminder ... or have completed it, set it aside and didn't send it in.

"Some people may have been missed and if they think they've been missed, it's good to try to make contact with our census hotline and that kind of thing and we can get a questionnaire out to them right away."

Moriarty said people who refuse to take part in the census can be fined $500 or sentenced to three months in jail.

She said only 50 people in Canada refused to fill out forms during the last census in 2001.

The information in the census is used for everything from equalization payments to deciding where to build schools and hospitals.
