The Bay St. George RCMP says a woman was struck and killed by a car in Stephenville on Friday night.

The victim, 65, was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the accident happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Massachusetts Drive near the Caribou Curling Club.

Cpl. John Butler said the woman was returning to her apartment after picking up some items downtown.

He said she appeared to be facing traffic while walking on the road. There are no sidewalks in that area.

Butler said the 21-year-old driver didn't spot the pedestrian because of the weather conditions.

"Basically, because it was white-out conditions, the driver indicated he didn't see her until the very last second," Butler said.

"He tried to swerve, and she struck the passenger side of his vehicle and they immediately stopped and went back and tried to provide whatever assistance they could."

RCMP said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and no charges are expected at this time.

The woman's name has not yet been released.
