It was a beautiful Boxing Day in St. John's on Thursday, and many people took advantage of the sunshine to try out the newest addition to Bannerman Park.

Skating pros and newcomers hit The Loop, the $1.8-million addition to the park that opened on Christmas Eve.

There are 16 kilometres of refrigerated piping underneath The Loop to keep it cold, so skaters can use the surface right through until April.

Some  were upset that on Christmas day the ice track was covered in snow, and they had to show up with shovels to clear it for use.

But the city said once the holidays come to an end, there will be regular maintenance of the ice to ensure it can be used as much as possible.
