A new initiative to raise awareness about violence against women is scheduled to open on Thursday in St. John's.

Angels Corner, a sitting area with a mural, a public message board and two large banners, is located on the corner of Prescott and Duckworth streets.

"It's a place where people can sit down and have a cup of coffee or whatever. And they can read about the issue and it gives people some time for pause to think about it," says city councilor Sheilagh O'Leary.

The project is bringing education and awareness about violence against women, reminding women there is a safe place for them, and remembering those who have lost their lives to violence.

The Angel Street project started in Iqaluit, Nunavut with Angel Streets, crescents, and corners being developed all across the country.
