St. John's has extended its current fire ban to include outdoor wood burning appliances and fireworks because of the continuing hot and dry weather.

In addition to open, outdoor fires, the city has also banned fires in residential fire pits, fire bowls and chiminea-style appliances.

The city decided to extend the ban based on a recommendation from the St. John's Regional Fire Department.

St. John's said in a statement that public concern about brush fires has increased and 911 has had a jump in calls from people about residential fire pits and the chiminea-style appliances.
