A man was arrested Thursday afternoon near downtown St. John's after he is alleged to have used a weapon to assault several people.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was called to a disturbance on Southside Road around 2:40 p.m., and were on the scene while the assault was still in progress.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene on three counts of assault with a weapon.

Police did not did disclose what the weapon was.

The suspect is also accused of breaching court orders.
