A woman was arrested in Mount Pearl on Saturday for theft and assault, after trying to escape in her car.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a call around 6 p.m. at a Colemans supermarket about a shoplifter.

The woman, 46, left the grocery store and tried to flee the scene in her car, but instead crashed into the shopping cart corral on the parking lot.

The corral was destroyed in the incident.

According to the RNC, the accused is also alleged to have tried to use her car as a weapon against a plainclothes private investigator.

The woman was charged with theft, assault with a weapon, and obstructing a police officer.

She was detained overnight at the lockup in St. John's and is scheduled for a court appearance on Sunday morning.
