Sentencing next week for woman who defrauded feds
A St. John's woman who pleaded guilty to fraud and breach of trust by a public official will be sentenced next week.
Colleen Esteves, 52, appeared in provincial court in St. John's Wednesday for a sentencing hearing.
Esteves worked with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, as well as Service Canada, and deposited unauthorized funds into a joint account she held with her partner.
The court was told during an earlier appearance that approximately $75,000 was deposited between January 2007 and August 2010. The court also heard that Esteves' partner had a gambling problem, and that he would inform authorities if she stopped taking money. He eventually did, when their relationship ended.
In a joint submission, the Crown and defence said Esteves should receive 18-months of house arrest and two years probation. Both parties agreed she should pay back the money.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 3.
