The RCMP in Makkovik have scaled back their search for Jake Basto.

Basto, 18, from Hopedale, was last seen around 2:00 a.m. last Saturday in Makkovik.

The family he was living with said he couldn't sleep and decided to go for a walk. He then didn't show up to his job at the town's fish plant the next morning. The police were called Saturday afternoon.

Corporal Boyce Noble said searchers have performed aerial, water and ground searches of more than a hundred square kilometres of the surrounding area. An infrared camera and police dog were also used in the search.

"It's terrible to have to exhaust all of our resources and not find anything belonging to Jake or Jake himself," says Noble.

Basto's family said he had recently graduated from high school and was looking forward to attending the College of the North Atlantic in Happy Valley-Goose Bay in September for carpentry.

Noble said the search will continue, but with fewer resources.
