Scott Reid, a political science instructor at Memorial University, has won a three-way battle for the Liberal nomination in the upcoming byelection in St. George's-Stephenville East.
Reid, a longtime party worker, polled 261 votes at a nomination meeting, or about 70 per cent of the turnout.
He edged Tom Rose and Corinne Slade, who had 148 and nine votes, respectively.
The western Newfoundland seat was made vacant when former cabinet minister Joan Shea resigned from politics on June 2.
Shea had held the seat since 2003, when the Tories swept to power.
The Progressive Conservatives and NDP have not selected their candidate for the byelection.
No date has yet been set for the byelection, which is expected to be held by at least early September.
