The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District has confirmed that a school bus driver was detained in St. John's Friday afternoon, after the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary received reports of a potential impaired driver on Thorburn Road.
But in a twist, the RNC said after their investigation, they found no grounds to charge the person.
A group of high school students was returning to their buses after a field trip, when police arrived to detain and examine one of the drivers of a contracted bus company. RNC officers stopped the bus driver on the Avalon Mall parking lot.
A spokesperson for the district said the students were safely transported back to school by another driver.
Police have not said whether the driver was given a breathalyzer.
The school district said it is carrying out an internal investigation, and has asked the bus contractor to suspend the driver for now from any school board-related duties.
