The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary tweeted that Robin Hood Bay Road has re-opened after a chlorine gas leak earlier today.

The area is now considered safe.

The police confirmed earlier that chlorine was leaked at Newco Metal and Auto Recycling in St. John's.

The area was evacuated for most of the afternoon. The RNC said three men were sent to hospital and later released.

Robin Hood Bay Road from Logy Bay Road to East White Hills Road was also closed for most of the afternoon.

St. John's Regional Fire Department Deputy Chief Don Byrne said the leak occurred after a 100 pound, rusty cylinder was punctured by a backhoe.
