Police were called to a bank in the west end of St. John's on Friday afternoon for what initially appeared to be a bank robbery.

The RNC said two men tried to enter the Scotiabank on Cornwall Avenue just after 2:30 p.m. through a back door in the building.

That triggered the alarm, and the bank went into lock down mode.

"There was no entry gained to the bank. It is merely suspicious activity at this time," said Const. Talia Murphy, a spokesperson for the RNC.

Murphy said police have no information to suggest weapons were involved, no employees were threatened or harmed, and no robbery took place.

Murphy said police are continuing their investigation and she has asked anyone with information about what happened to contact the RNC.
