A police car on its way to a reported robbery in progress flipped and landed on its side in downtown St. John’s early this morning.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, a lone veteran officer was travelling westbound on Duckworth Street and entering New Gower Street when the rear of the car slid on the wet pavement and struck the median and a flower pot. The car tipped over and landed on its side.

The male officer, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured.

Police said speed has been ruled out as a contributing factor, but the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the apparent robbery turned out to be a dispute over cab fares involving two taxi drivers and 10 intoxicated men, according to the RNC.

The matter was resolved without incident.
