The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in the St. John's area were busy Tuesday night with two separate crimes involving a stolen vehicle and an impaired driver.

The first incident happened about 7 p.m. on Mount Carson Avenue in Mount Pearl, regarding a stolen vehicle which had been reported stolen on Jan. 30.

Constabulary officers approached the vehicle, but the driver sped away. In the process, he struck the unmarked police car. Two passengers were detained at the scene.

Police were eventually able to stop the vehicle, but the driver ran off. With the assistance of the canine team, the man was eventually apprehended.

The man, 22, was taken to hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. He remains in hospital. A number of charges await him, including assault with a weapon and dangerous driving.

The other incident took place just after midnight, when a man drove through the fence of Government House on Military Road in St. John's.

When police arrived, the driver had already fled on foot. With the help of the canine unit he was apprehended several blocks away. The man was charged with impaired driving.

Police said damage to the fence was not extensive.
