Rex Hillier, a town councillor in Conception Bay South, will carry the Liberal flag in the next provincial election in the district of the same name.
Hillier, a retired school principal, won the nomination against competitor Steve Porter.
The party announced Hillier's victory in a statement on Monday night, but did not release vote results.
Conception Bay South is currently represented in the House of Assembly by Justice Minister Terry French.
The Tories have held the seat consistently since 1996. It had last been held by the Liberals when former cabinet minister Patt Cowan held the district between 1989 and 1996.
