Two men who were initially thought to be in trouble on the water in western Newfoundland have been accused of stealing.

According to the RCMP, the men stole a small boat and broke into a cabin near Port Saunders early Saturday.

The theft of the boat triggered a search by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and a Cormorant helicopter was dispatched to aid in the rescue.

However, the men were later discovered in the cabin they had broken into and subsequently trashed.

They were taken to Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders and treated for minor injuries.

Both men are scheduled to appear at Corner Brook provincial court, and face numerous charges including break and enter, mischief over five thousand dollars, and taking a vessel without consent.
