Reprieve found for Labrador Jungle Jim's restaurant
A restaurant in Happy Valley-Goose Bay that was set to close on Tuesday will stay open after all, thanks to the approval of two foreign workers.
Co-owner Lloyd Hillier spoke out last week about the threatened closure, saying that two cooks now working through the Temporary Foreign Workers program had to leave the country.
As well, Hillier and his wife have been unable for months to find any local applicants willing to work at the restaurant for $18 per hour, adding that the restaurant cannot compete with higher wages sparked by the Muskrat Falls building boom.
Hillier said Monday, however, that two applications that had been previously submitted to the Temporary Foreign Workers Program have been accepted.
The two new employees will arrive in Happy Valley-Goose Bay shortly, and one of the cooks has agreed to stay on for a couple of extra weeks.
