Mount Pearl residents won't need to pick a new mayor in the Sept. 24 municipal election, simply because no one wants to unseat incumbent Randy Simms.

Simms, who has been mayor since 2007, won re-election by acclamation when nominations closed on Monday.

All six of the sitting councillors in Mount Pearl are running again. They are joined by seven challengers.

Simms is not the only high-profile mayor to be acclaimed ahead of next month's municipal elections across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Gander mayor Claude Elliott won his seat again by acclamation. He's been the mayor for the last 17 years and also went unopposed in the 2009 election.

At least a dozen people are vying for a seat on Gander's town council.
