The Newfoundland and Labrador government has reached a tentative agreement with the province's largest public sector union, in a four-year deal that includes modest pay increases.
The deal with NAPE includes a two-year wage freeze, followed by a five per cent increase in pay over the last two years of the deal.
The tentative deal is retroactive to the spring of 2012, and will expire in 2016.
The government and NAPE announced the tentative deal in separate news releases.
"I believe when our members have an opportunity to see the total package they will be prepared to accept the agreement," NAPE president Carol Furlong said in a statement.
Furlong said the deal was hammered out "after marathon bargaining sessions over the past eight days," and include what the union called significant gains in benefits, as well as a new job evaluation system.
"We have made substantial gains on a number of monetary issues," Furlong said in a statement.
"In some cases, monetary benefits have increased in excess of 300 per cent. In other cases, monetary benefits have increased by 100 per cent. These are unprecedented gains for NAPE members," Furlong said.
Each full-time worker would also get a signing bonus of $1,400.
Union members will vote on the deal in the next few weeks.
