Electricity was knocked out in the Shea Heights area and several surrounding neighbourhoods in St. John's Monday morning after a vehicle struck a utility pole on Blackhead Road.

Newfoundland Power was working to restore power to several areas in the city, including Waterford Bridge Road, Southside Road and Old Topsail Road. 

Police are investigating whether the man swerved his vehicle to avoid a moose. 

The collision happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. 

The man was taken to hospital for observation and treatment. He was understood to be conscious when responders arrived on the scene and shut down traffic on Blackhead Road.
