RCMP are treating a weekend house fire on Newfoundland's west coast as suspicious.

The blaze all but destroyed a house in Port au Choix on Sunday morning.

"Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, however the building sustained heavy structural and smoke damage," the RCMP said in a statement.

The house was not occupied at the time.

Staff with Newfoundland and Labrador's Fire Commissioner's Office are working with RCMP investigators to determine the cause of the fire.

RCMP are asking anyone with a tip about the case to call the local detachment at (709) 861-3555, or to go through the anonymous Crime Stoppers service at 1-800-222-8477.
