The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary had to break the windows of a car in order to rescue a small dog on Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle was parked in the Costco parking lot in St. John's.

The RNC tweeted that the windows of the car were left open about one inch. The temperature inside the car was estimated at 45 C and rising.

The CBC's Todd O'Brien tweeted that after the dog was rescued, it was taken somewhere cool and given water.

The investigation into the incident continues.
