The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is warning women to be careful after a number of recent sexual assaults were reported in downtown St. John’s.

The women were in public or socializing when it’s believed drugs were secretly slipped into their drinks before the assaults.

The sexual assault unit of the RNC is investigating, and police said they have identified so-called "persons of interest" in the cases.

The types of drugs involved affect memory and make the investigations challenging, added police.

The RNC wants the public to be aware and report any suspicious activity.

The police also provided the following pieces of advice:

  • Socialize with trusted friends and stay together.
  • Watch your drink being made and do not leave it unattended.
  • If you feel more intoxicated than expected, seek medical help.
