The RCMP and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary are investigating a complaint of sexual assault that is said to have taken place in Gander over the weekend.

According to police, the girl was attending the Sci-Fi on the Rock convention at the Holiday Inn in St. John's on Saturday.

At some point in the day, the girl ended up in Gander, which is where the sexual assault is said to have occurred.

Police confirmed to CBC News the incident allegedly took place over Saturday and Sunday, and the girl ended up back in St. John's on Sunday, but they're still trying to figure out how the girl got to Gander.

The RCMP and RNC are not ready to label the incident an abduction.

The RCMP is taking the lead on the case in Gander, while the RNC is assisting officers by conducting interviews with witnesses in St. John's.

Police are not willing to confirm any details at this point about who else may be involved.

No charges have yet been laid.

CBC reached out to organizers of the Sci-Fi convention, but did not receive a response at time of publication.
