The Sir Ambrose Shea lift bridge in Placentia has reopened to vehicles, but not vessels.

The word came Thursday night from the province's transportation department.

The bridge was closed last Sunday after a mechanical problem left it partially up, on a 45-degree angle.

It's since been lowered to road level, and deemed safe for vehicles to pass over. The reopening should eliminate the need to use the longer route into town along the old southeast Placentia dirt road.

Officials continue to work on a plan to get fishing boats out of the harbour.
