The 62-year-old pilot of a Cessna float plane that crashed Saturday afternoon on Middle Pond, near Hawke’s Bay, was able to walk away from the incident according to the RCMP.
The plane crashed on takeoff but the pilot, from Port Saunders, was uninjured.
The man had to walk about 8 kilometres to get cellular service before he could call police. Then he waited for them to arrive.
When they arrived on the scene, the RCMP escorted the pilot to hospital for an assessment.
RCMP Sgt. Marc Coulombe credited the pilot for handling the situation well.
"He did everything right, and he's a very lucky gentleman," said Coulombe.
There are no details on the condition of the aircraft.
