The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says people in the St. John's area should be wary of door-to-door salespeople pitching home-security systems that purport to be connected straight to police HQ.

The RNC said it has received complaints of "incredibly aggressive" salespeople who try to drum up business by talking about crime in specific neighbourhoods.

That information, though, is made up.

"They are providing false statistics about the prevalence of break and entries in the neighborhood and advising that they have a direct contract with the RNC," the force said in a statement.

That latter claim is also not true, police said.

"No security company has a direct contract with the RNC in response to their alarms," the statement said

Police said if such a sales pitch is made at the door, people should ask for official identification and then contact the organization directly. Police warned consumers not to let strangers into their homes, and not to part with their personal information or money.
