A much-contested proposed rate increase at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook was approved on Thursday.

The original increase was 15 per cent, but Western Sports Entertainment — the operator of the facility — decided on 10 per cent.

The rate increase applies to all meeting spaces and ice surfaces and will be implemented beginning in September.

Parents and athletes rallied around Corner Brook City Hall on Wednesday to protest the proposed increase.

The Pepsi Centre is also looking at bringing in fees for using the walking track, which is currently open at no cost.
