Penguins grab Game 1 from IceCaps
Game 2 of AHL Eastern Conference final set for Sunday night in St. John's
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins took Game 1 of the AHL Eastern Conference final Saturday night, edging the St. John's IceCaps 3-2 at Mile One Centre.
Former IceCap Peter Mannino made 31 saves while Tom Kostopoulos, Chuck Kobasew and Conor Sheary each had a goal for the Penguins.
Andrew Gordon scored both goals for St. John's, while Michael Hutchinson turned aside 29 shots in a losing effort.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, but the Penguins scored twice in the middle frame for a 3-1 lead heading into the final stanza.
Gordon got his second of the game five minutes into the third, but Mannino held the IceCaps at bay the rest of the way to secure the win for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
St. John's went 0 for 5 on the powerplay, but successfully killed off two penalties.
The IceCaps look to even things up Sunday night before the series shifts to Pennsylvania this week for Games 3, 4, and 5, if necessary.
Games 6 and 7 would be played back in St. John's.
