A young girl from Torbay weathered a storm of words this week to emerge triumphant in a spelling competition that gradually eliminated several dozen other children.

Emily Hynes, 10, came out on top in The Telegram's annual spelling bee, from a field of more than 60 students between Grade 4 and Grade 8.

Hynes, who thought she had been eliminated before being called back to the stage, correctly spelled the word "parabolic" to win the $2,000 prize. She also wins the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., later this year to compete in the Scripps Spelling Bee.
