One person is dead following a boating accident Thursday on Newfoundland's West Coast.

Officers with the Department of Federal Fisheries were on routine patrol when they spotted an overturned boat in the Bay of Islands.

Four people were spotted nearby in the water.

Three of those in the water managed to be rescued, the fourth was pronounced dead.

A Cormorant helicopter, two airplanes and a coast guard vessel responded.

The identity of the dead person has not been released.

The rescue and recovery happened just Northwest of Little Port, Newfoundland, that's where The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax says an ambulance was standing by for the survivors.

JRCC says it was DFO personnel who responded first to the scene.
