One driver is dead following a head-on collision between an SUV and a tractor-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Whitbourne junction around noon Tuesday.
The RCMP have not identified the driver of the SUV, but did confirm that he is from outside the province.
RCMP Sgt. Randy Pack said the white SUV was travelling west, crossed the median line and crashed into the east-bound truck.
Captain Ray Gosse, with the Whitbourne Volunteer Fire Department, said the driver of the SUV was dead when the crew arrived on scene.
"It was nerve-racking. It was my first fatality on scene, and it's something to deal with. We try to do our best when we are called upon, and that's what we do," said Gosse.
He said the volunteer crew has professionals who will help debrief them following the accident.
Responders had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the man's body from the vehicle.
The driver of the transport truck was unharmed in the collision.
Police had to shut down the TCH at the scene of the accident, but later opened one lane heading in both directions around 2 p.m. Tuesday after crews removed some of the wreckage.
