Federal officials say it could cost $1.5 million to fix mistakes that were made when a new breakwater was built in the area, according to the Musgrave Harbour harbour authority.

Harbour authority official Cluney Pardy said the breakwater in the northeastern Newfoundland community was part of a $6 million upgrade by the Small Craft Harbours section of the federal fisheries department.

He said the new breakwater creates an undertow that makes it difficult to tie up at the new section of the area’s wharf.

"We've got a problem," said Pardy.

"We got a multi-million dollar harbour that needs to be fixed. It’s totally useless now. So we need money to fix it now."

Pardy said he hopes funding to repair the wharf will be provided in the next federal budget.
