Memorial University is reviewing the future direction of its varsity sports program.

President Gary Kachanoski has established a task force to carry out a formal review.

He said the Task Force on Competitive Sports will look at a wide range of issues, including scholarships, recruitment, and all aspects of competitive MUN athletics.

"We plan to consult with the Memorial University community both past and present," Kachanoski said.

He added the group will also review past activities, as well as future goals and expectations.

Kachanoski said the task force does not plan to consider adding hockey to the sports program.

The review will provide development of the program from 2013 to 2020.

Memorial has about 175 male and female student athletes involved in soccer, cross-country running, basketball, volleyball, swimming, and wrestling.

The university said increased levels of competition across Canada prompted the review.

The last university-level review of MUN athletics took place in 2005.
