RCMP have suspended an officer who faces a charge of assault following a weekend off-duty incident.

The RCMP's major crimes unit is investigating the complaint, which was made to Gander district RCMP early on Saturday.

"The police officer was arrested for the assault and later released on conditions which include having no contact with the victim," the force said in a brief statement Monday.

The officer cannot be named until he makes a first appearance in provincial court on Aug. 7.

RCMP said the officer is suspended while the investigation continues.

The officer has been instructed to have no contact with the complainant.
