The government of Newfoundland and Labrador is bringing in more restrictions to the crumbling bridge in Placentia.
The Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge will be closed to traffic from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Monday, January 21 to Friday, January 25. Government said the closure is necessary to repair the bridge that has been plagued with problems. Last year, heavier vehicles were restricted from crossing the bridge after an inspection revealed serious structural problems.
A tender call was isssued for construction of a new bridge in the fall. Officials said they will make accommodations for emergency vehicles to cross the bridge during the latest repair work.
The bridge was first built in 1961.
